Seven Situations in Which Hiring a Travel Agent Will Pay Off

If you want to take a trip these days, you hardly need more than your computer and a credit card to make your arrangements. Travel Web sites such as Orbitz, Travelocity and CheapTickets.com give consumers the power and flexibility to create and purchase their own trips, snagging deals and discounts along the way.

So does it ever pay off to hire a travel agent anymore? "There are lots of occasions when it's smart to use a travel agent," says Nancy Dunnan, editor of TravelSmartNewsletter.com. In many circumstances, hiring a travel agent can save you both time and money -- not to mention hassle.

She adds that travel agents in business today must be capable, talented enough to compete with online business. "Since the arrival of so much available on the Internet, the travel agents who remain are for the most part really top notch. Those who were marginal or not so swift dropped by the wayside with the rise of research and booking on the Internet," Dunnan said.

You should consider using a travel agent in these seven situations:
1. If you are pressed for a time. Let a travel agent can do the research for you. Finding deals on the Internet can be time consuming, and a travel agent can do the legwork quickly and efficiently.
2. Want to take a cruise? "Travel agents who are cruise specialists can easily find excellent discounts and/or cabin upgrades," says Dunnan. The overwhelming number of cruises and destinations make it difficult for the first-time cruiser to select the right trip, and a travel agent can help with that too.
3. Road warriors. Frequent travelers can benefit from a travel agent, because the agent will work hard to keep your business. You can bet that agents will want to find you the lowest prices and upgrades so that you'll keep coming back.
4. Anticipating trouble. If you're traveling to areas prone to hurricanes during hurricane season, use an agent, who "will make certain that you are booked into resorts and hotels that will refund some or part of your costs should a hurricane hit the area. An agent can also help you move from one destination to another, get you back home and help you get a refund," says Dunnan. In fact, travel agents are always useful if you're traveling in an area that has been struck by disaster. "We had a number of subscribers tell us how their agent helped them deal with travel problems during the days and weeks after 9/11. More recently, praise for agents came in from readers traveling in Colorado and other states during the huge snowstorms.
5. Planning a complicated itinerary? Travel agents are invaluable. For example, a first-time trip to China, Tibet and Russia can be difficult to plan, and packaged tours aren't for everybody. An experienced agent can help you put it together, saving you both time and money.
6. Special needs travel. Elderly or ill travelers can benefit from the extra care travel agents can secure. A travel agent can negotiate access for medical equipment such as wheelchairs and oxygen and can also find you safe and easily accessible accommodations.
7. Business interruptions. And if your airline goes on strike or declares bankruptcy, a travel agent can help you quickly get an alternative flight. So carry your travel agent's contact information with you on the trip.

When choosing a travel agent, Dunnan recommends finding one who belongs to the American Society of Travel Agents. For more information visit the group's Web site at www.astanet.com.

BASIC SAFETY RULES
Research the country of your destination, get as much information as possible about the places you intend to visit. Get yourself familiar with local customs and regulations. Travelmake's Destination Guides is a good place to start. Our online Travel Store offers a range of safety items for travelers. Here you can also purchase detailed maps, informative guidebooks, first aid kits and other items necessary for making your trip safe.

- Obtain travel insurance, preferably with the plan that provides direct, immediate payment to the medical provider.
- Before you leave, photocopy your documents and tickets so it would be easier to replace them if they are lost or stolen.
- Keep a low profile. Try to blend in with the locals as best you can. Leave expensive jewelry and precious valuables at home.
- Do not discuss your travel plans publicly.
- Stay alert, especially in high-risk countries.
- Do not expose your valuables (money, documents, jewelry, etc.), keep them locked in the hotel safe.
- Carry only small amounts of cash.
- Wear a consealed money belt, keep your essential documents and money in it.
- Each time you use your credit card, keep an eye on it until it is returned to you. Check credit cards when they are returned.
- Never leave your personal items unattended.
- Respect local customs and regulations.
- If you get into trouble, contact the nearest embassy.
- If you are unfamiliar with the local language, write down some key phrases in the local language.
- In case of theft, get a police report immediately if you'll be making an insurance claim. Thefts of traveler's checks must be reported within 24 hours.

AIR TRAVEL SAFETY TIPS
Check in as fast as you can and do not delay in the main terminal area. Do not discuss your travel plans with fellow passengers, crew, or even traveling companions. Get yourself familiar with exits and safe areas. Try to stay away from unattended baggage. Verify baggage claim checks before and after flight. Never leave your luggage unattended. Stay calm and alert. Try to occupy a window seat in the coach section. This position is less accessible by hijackers.

HOTEL SAFETY TIPS
Get a card with the hotel's name and address. You can show it to a cab driver if you get lost. Stay in hotels on well-traveled streets in safer areas of the city of your destination.

Lower level floors are safer in case of fire. Although, avoid the first floor as it is the best location for burglars.

Get yourself familiar with the location of stairways, fire escapes routes, emergency exits and alarms.

Keep your hotel room door locked at all times. Before opening the door to a stranger, verify who it is. Never invite strangers into your hotel room.

Never leave your valuables (a camera, documents, jewelry, etc.) lying around where hotel employees can see them.

Before leaving you room for the day, put the "Do not disturb" sign on your door to give the impression that the room is occupied. When you are ready for the room to be cleaned, call the maid.
Use the hotel safe to store valuables.

Carry the room key with you, do not leave it at front desk.

Do not use your name when answering the phone.

When returning to your hotel at night, use the main entrance. Be observant before entering parking lots.

HOTEL FIRE SAFETY TIPS
If a fire starts take your key before leaving the room, as most hotel doors lock automatically. Do not use elevators during a fire. If you encounter heavy smoke in the stairwell, do not try to run through it, you may not make it. Turn around and walk up to the roof fire exit. If all exits are blocked or if there is heavy smoke in the hallway, you will be better off staying in your room. If there is smoke in your room, open a window and turn on the bathroom vent. If your phone works, call the desk to tell them where you are, or call the fire department to report your location in the building. Hang a bed sheet out the window as a signal. Fill the bathtub with water to use for fire fighting. Bail water onto your door or any hot walls. Stuff wet towels into cracks under and around doors where smoke can enter. Place a wet towel over your mouth and nose to help filter out smoke. If you are above the second floor, you will be better off fighting the fire in your room than jumping.

STREET SAFETY TIPS
Buy a map, familiarize yourself with the city and location of your hotel. With the help of hotel employees locate unsafe areas of the city and avoid visiting them by any means.

Do not stay out on the streets late at night. When walking, remain on wide, well-lit streets. If necessary, arrange for taxi service. Watch your drinks being poured. Never accept a drink from a stranger. Get advice from your hotel workers about reputable restaurants and other entertainment.
Never resist armed robbery, it could lead to violence.

We wish you a successful and safe trip!

Round’em Up! Take The Family On A Modern-Day Cattle Drive Vacation

Looking for a rewarding and memorable family vacation idea? A cattle drive may be just the thing. We’re talking about real ranchers on real working cattle ranches. Ranch vacations are a good way for them to help support the ranch. But it’s not all business with them. They want to share their way of life and educate people about a quickly disappearing aspect of our American history and culture.

Don’t worry if you’ve never sat in a saddle before. Sure, some riding experience is helpful but the activities are geared for whatever skill level you have. All the ranches provide horse riding instruction for anyone who needs or wants it...

In general, the more experience you have, the more you can expect to get into the thick of things on the cattle drive. Less experienced riders put in the back or at the sides. But that doesn’t mean you will be bored. There’s still plenty of action and hard work for everyone.

Yes, I said hard work. This is not a lay-about-on-the-beach vacation. But that’s the idea. You work hard and you play hard. This is a chance to tackle unique challenges in a fun and adventurous way. A cattle drive vacation can be a rewarding experience, particularly for children. It’s a tremendous opportunity to build their self-confidence and self-esteem.

You can typically expect to spend between 4 and 10 hours a day in the saddle. This will most likely mean a little discomfort but the rewards are worth it. Just be sure to bring a long pain relievers for muscle aches and antibiotic cream in case of a saddle sore or two.

Some ranches have cabins or lodges where you sleep at night. Others put you in a tent on the trail. Some will even have you sleeping out under the stars.

Besides cattle drives you can also participate in real cowboy stuff. You can help sort and brand the cattle. Learn roping. Check out the fence lines. And it’s not all work and no play. Relaxing around the campfire, playing cards, pitching horseshoes or some good old-fashioned saloon dancing.

Every ranch has a different program so check them out for what suits you and your family. Whatever ranch you choose, I think the whole family will be challenged and have a heck a lot of fun too.

How and Where To Enjoy Gorilla Safari While On African Holiday

Gorillas like human are curious, they can be bored, bold, annoyed, have pleasure, excited, afraid, can worry, show affection, be thoughtful and they can be hostile. Gorillas like to study people to see if they are friendly.

Gorillas are threatened primate species in the world with the remaining living in Africa and in countries Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Known to be the largest living primates on Earth, Gorillas are of three kinds; 1) Eastern Lowland Gorillas, which reside in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; 2) Western Lowland Gorillas which live only in West Africa and: 3) Mountain Gorillas, which are only found in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Listed as one of the top 10 threatened / endangered species, there are only 655 species remaining. There are approximately 355 gorillas in the Volcano and Virunga Mountains of Rwanda and Congo and another separate group of 300 in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. There are no Mountain Gorillas living outside of their native mountain forest home. Gorillas are protected by international law. Capturing or killing gorillas and other endangered species is illegal.

Unlike chimps, Gorillas live in groups / families without territorial boundaries but with family’s range from 2 to 15 square miles. The females decide who they are going to allow into their family. If a gorilla wants to join another group and the females do not want her in, they will scratch her in the face and keep her out. If a female wants to leave a group to find a male she likes better, but the other females like her very much, they will grab her by the legs and not allow her to leave.

Female gorillas weigh approximately 350 pounds and adult male gorillas can weigh approximately 700 pounds. Adult gorillas can be seven feet tall with an arm span of 8 feet.

Gorillas feed on 58 different types of plant species, including stems, roots, leaves, flowers, thistles, ferns, tree wood and bamboo shoots. Gallium vines, fruits and celery are their favorite foods. Gorillas have much larger teeth in the back of their mouth than humans do so that they can grind foliage, bark and bamboo.

Gorillas like human are curious, they can be bored, bold, annoyed, have pleasure, excited, afraid, can worry, show affection, be thoughtful and they can be hostile. Gorillas like to study people to see if they are friendly.

Gorillas communicate by stomach rumbling which means they are contented, a pig grunt of harsh staccato grunts used when disciplining or complaining. A roar or scream is given when a gorilla is threatened. A loud hoot or roar is given when silverbacks are interacting. This is done by chest beating and thrashing of trees. When gorillas are afraid they send out a powerful odor from their glands.

Having endured decades of civil war in Central and East Africa, gorillas are confronted by the devastating consequences of increased habitat loss, poaching for the bush meat trade and the spread of dangerous diseases like Ebola. “These animals are Threatened” therefore make a tour to these countries to have a look at the few remaining primate giants before they are lost. Spend some time with them, they are awe-inspiring.

Gorilla tracking the Activity.

On this day, in the morning you wake up to a breakfast and then transfer to the park headquarters for the briefing before you set off at 9:00 am through the tracks to search for the humble giants. You have to go with packed lunch as the time taken to before meeting the great apes is un predictable. However the time ranges between 2-9 hours depending on the movement of the giant primates (Gorillas). The activity is tiresome, it involves walking along steep hilly tracks however encountering these great relatives of man erases all the poor memories/ hardships you went through in trying to find them. They are awesome!

Safaris to see the gorillas of Africa can be arranged by Sydah Naigaga of Access Africa Safaris

The Advantages Of Flying Using Air Charters

Most of us have been used to flying through commercial flights from the major airlines. When we choose commercial flights, the only thing that we consider is if we are going to fly in the business class, first class or economy. Seldom do we consider that we subject ourself to airline policies and regulations that can be strenuous or affect our privacy. Very few people really consider flying through a private air charter. So, what exactly happens when you charter a private plane? Here are the things that will make you better understand flying through private air charters. Flying using a private air charter has a number of advantages, here are some of them.

1. Travel According To Your Schedule

Have you experienced trying to call airline after airline just to inquire if they will be able to book you for a flight so you can attend a business meeting in New York? Airlines offer you a scheduled flight that may not fit your schedule considering the other meetings that you have to attend before flying to New York. Finally, you no longer need to keep up with the schedule to keep up with the schedules that airlines give you. You can fly at whatever time you choose. This way, you wouldn't have to cancel important meetings or family activities at home just so you wouldn't be late for your next out-of-state business meeting.

2. Choose The Airport

Unlike major airlines that only fly to busy airports, flying using a chartered plane allows you to choose which airports can you land. Therefore, you don't have to spend so much time traveling by car from the airport to your destination, if there is a nearby airport. Also, you can prefer to avoid landing in the congested airports to save your traveling time. There's no need for connecting flights or to change planes. With a chartered aircraft, you have the convenience of traveling continuously from your location to your destination. Unlike with commercial flights where you have to change planes to get to the connecting flight, you can sit comfortably even from long country to country flights.

3. Be On Time

Delayed flights can really be annoying, especially if you only have a few minutes before you next business engagement. A few minutes of delay can cost you much money. And what could be worse that missing your flight? Nothing to worry anymore. Chartered flights help you keep up with all the things on you schedule because you can say when you would like to fly.

4. No Lost Luggage

Losing your luggage is a nuisance. What if you only have a few minutes to freshen up and change your clothes before your next schedule? You can't spend so much time looking for your luggage which could be mistakenly taken by another flight passenger. And doesn't help that the airport will just send the luggage to your place when they find it. Since you are flying on your own or with your associates in an air charter, the risk of having your luggage mistakenly taken by another person is very meager. What's even better is that you know who you're flying with.

5. Get More Privacy

Flying through a regular commercial flight doesn't permit you to discuss transactions with your colleagues. What if you just thought of a better way to make your presentation? You restrain yourself from taking about confidential details of your transaction, as you might be heard by the people sitting in front or behind you. Or what if you're just so tired and wanted to get some sleep but other people just keep on taking? Chartered airplanes give you the privacy to discuss business transactions with your colleagues. Or if you just choose to sleep and relax, you have enough room to rest and nobody will bother you.

6. Business Class Convenience

If you think flying through a chartered flight denies you of the personalized service offered by airlines, think again. You can also have catered foods and the amenities given to business flight passengers. So, if you want to have the convenience of flying when you want, wherever you want, the confidence that your luggage will not be lost and enough privacy to do what you want during your own time, flying using an air charter is the best option for you.

The Beauty of a Glass Top Humidor

In addition to a standard humidor, travel, cabinet, and glass top humidors bring joy to the true cigar aficionado. For the cigar smoker who may not need the massive design of a cabinet humidor but still wants to add weight to his or her prized collection of fine cigars, glass top humidors are an excellent selection. The term glass top humidor does not refer to the design or materials used in the manufacturing of the humidor. Instead, a more common understanding of the “glass top” humidor is “desktop” humidor.

The glass top humidor is very popular for several reasons. First, the investment necessary to purchase a glass top humidor is much less than for a cabinet humidor. A search on the internet reveals that there are countless glass top humidors for less than $200 that come in untold designs, shapes and quality. The average cigar capacity of a glass top humidor can vary from smaller units that hold 25 or so cigars to larger units that keep upwards of 200 cigars.

Anyone needing to maintain more than 200 cigars will need to research buying a smaller chest size humidor or a small to large cabinet humidor. As with cabinet humidors, the most common interior wood is the Spanish cedar wood for its quality in maintaining humidity levels and for adding rich flavors to the cigar.

One additional offering with glass top humidors is that they will almost always offer external hygrometers (the gauge for determining the internal humidity levels.) This is extremely important for two reasons. For one, if the glass top humidor needs to be opened each time to determine the humidity levels, each time the case is opened, the humidity level will fluctuate. This can lead to the humidifier being overworked and possibly failing. Secondly, one must observe and monitor the levels to determine the effectiveness of any humidor and if there is a failure in the humidifier.

Again, glass top humidors, also referred to as desktop humidors, are a small investment and can be enjoyed by any cigar aficionado.
